A while back I noticed Tibbe had one each day in his left eye for 2 days and he had scratched at his left ear a time or two each day. I smelled of his left ear and it smelled sort of sweet & musky so I began using his ear cleaner from the vet twice a day for a week. He stopped scratching his ear and stopped the eye discharge. It's been two weeks and no eye discharge or ear smell or scratching has returned but if it does, it is vet time as it could be mites or infection.
When Jilly had a bad tooth, her little eyes produced some discharge that collected and hardened on the side of her eye nearest her muzzle and after her tooth was pulled and a dental cleaning done, the discharge & crusting stopped. So my dogs at least can make eye discharge when there is something medically wrong that needs attention.
