Don't know about canines but before my hip surgery, a left neck lymph node doubled, tripled in size and I had no infection or fever. Went to two dentists(one for second opinion), full x-rays, etc. and two Internists - couldn't find a thing but both said "something will show up down the line in the area of your mouth or ear, face, neck". Cleared for total joint surgery. Two weeks after I came home from surgery, I had tooth that became very sensitive and the specialist that did the root canal said that without doubt that was what had caused my lymph to blow up - that the symptoms or infection was starting up then but just didn't show up on x-ray until all those weeks later. I suppose the lymph system kind of works similarly in canines.
