This would depend on if there is an actual tear completely through the intestine or a tear in the lining only. If the tear is only in the lining at this point, infection can begin & then spread quickly once it starts.You could compare it to an abscess in a cat from a bite, one minute the cat appears to be fine & literally have a raging fever & serious infection the next minute. The seriousness lies in the fact that it is inside the animal where you can't see what damage is being done by the bone . The fact that the pup is vomiting & having diarrhea is the 1st sign of peritonitis.
