No, I wouldn't say that you failed at training. You still have so much more to do. Continue reinforcing the things he has already learned and work on the rest of it. Plus if you cant stand him barking why not just get out of bed and figure out what he needs. He's trying to tell you something in the only way he knows how. Does he need to potty, is he hungry or thirsty, what it is? It's up to you to figure out what it is he needs in order to quiet him down.
Stopping the barking is hard work..try to reward him when he is in a calm state and correct him the instant that he shows signs of going into bark mode.
