Congrats on your new baby, he's precious. Yes, he was way to young to be takin from his Momma and litter mates, but as you and others have said, what's done is done, so try to make the best of it from here on out. Our Mags (yorkie/chihuahua mix) was only 1 pound 1 ounce when we got her, she was just turning 6 weeks old. I had no choice though, it was either get her and her brother, or they were going to be euthenized. They came from a HORRID situation and were both already sick when they came to us. Sadly, Mags brother Luke passed away a few days after him being with us. Mags was on medication the first 6 months of her life because she was so sick, and with her being so small, I had to set my alarm clock and get up every 2-3 hours through the night for the first 3-4 months and feed her and make SURE she ate. My vet doesn't recommend nutrical, he doesn't like the greasiness of it and said he'd rather me use kayro and water, so I made sure I went out and got that and kept it on hand. Also, he didn't want Mags having play sessions any longer than 10 minutes twice a day. It was very hard, but I did what I had to do and kept her entertained without her running around burning off calories and energy and depleting her sugar. I didn't sleep with her in my bed though for the longest time, she was way to small and I was afraid my husband or I would roll over on her thinking she was just a bump in the blanket or that after I'd fallen asleep, she's fall or jump off the bed. She cried cause she wanted in the bed with us, so I put her kennel on a table beside my bed and slept with my hand fingers through the cage bars, it helped her calm down and sleep. Be VERY careful about having her around other animals and being out and about right now till she gets all her shots. Also, my vet wouldn't give her all her shots like normal, she was way to small, so he stretched them out over a longer period of time. I think she was between 5 and 6 months old before she had all her shots done with. And please be very careful when people or children hold the baby, one fall or drop or fall could be fatal at such a young age and being so tiny. As for the lil scabs on him, Mags had them as well and also some balding where fur was just gone, our vet did a skin scraping and she had demodectic mange and a compromised immune system, I believe it was Goodwinal (sp) he prescribed for it, it was the safest thing to use on her for it because of her weight and age. I had to use it on her for months, it finally got her cleared up, but it was a long slow process and the safest. Our vet also said with her having the demodectic mange, once it was cleared up, her going into heat or anything else that was stressful to her and her having a now compromised immune system, it could cause her to get it back. When she was of a weight that satisfied doc, we had her spayed. She's now a lil over 5 years old and healthy, but because of her start in life, she'll always have a compromised immune system. Please be very, very careful with your lil one and don't leave him alone for long periods of time. Him eating on time and keeping his sugar level up is VERY IMPORTANT as well as making sure he stay hydrated. Good luck with your lil one.
