I wouldn't brush when it is soaking wet. Use a wide tooth metal comb (or fingers) when soaking wet.
Brush with a conditioning brush spray applied to the brush to distribute it evenly while using the least amount of product possible. Some people apply directly to the dog. I can't do that with my guys or they end up a big, sticky mess.
