  Oh how horrable, poor dog.  Yes, if they are licking more than a little bit, there could be a problem.  I know one person whose dog had a thorn in the pad and it licked a big hole in it's pad it a very short time.  Didn't cry or anything, the only thing she noticed was licking his foot.
