Yeah don't blame yourself, honey. You were driving and he wasn't leashed. Believe it or not minor crashes sound horrendous even from far away. Maybe he was a resilient dog that bumped his hiney against your car and that's the big thump you heard. He probably yelped from it hurting and getting scared bc if he was that bad you would have seen them somewhere stopped on the side of the road flagging down help. I can say with certainty you didn't kill him especially without seeing blood. But hopefully his owner is as scared as you and will put a leash on Fido! So go relax and have some wine.
