I was a big dog person too. I didn't like small dogs just because I liked the size of a big dog. I thought small dogs were very cute, but not for me. I didn't think Chihuahuas were cute at all.
My daughter wanted a Chihuahua since she was about 5 and a half. She saved up her money so that she could get one out of the shelter or a rescue once one of our older dogs passed away. A year and half later our Husky died and a few months after that we found a Chi at the shelter. She changed us forever. I now only want tiny dogs or very small dogs (under 10 lbs). I now really love Chihuahuas and think they're so adorable.
Our Chihuahua was our gateway drug to the world of tiny dogs. I had to have a Yorkie and I found one in rescue after months of looking and waiting. We actually just adopted her about 3 weeks ago and we found a mini poodle (less than 10 lbs) at a rescue last weekend and brought her home.
I am now addicted to Yorkies and other tiny-small dogs.
I get comments all the time about how awful Chihuahuas are and those are often the same people who tell me our Chi is so adorable and sweet just before they ask what kind of dog she is. They don't believe me when I say she is a Chihuahua because she is a tri-colored chi and well behaved.
I haven't really heard anybody tell me that Yorkies are terrible, but I'm sure I will eventually run into these people. |
