Most of mine are trained for both. In the warmer months they go outside, in the cold months they go on a pad.
It really comes in handy having them trained both ways when your traveling. When I was staying at a hotel and didn't have an outdoor spot available the pad was useful. When going to other peoples house though they go outdoors.

A few however are just pad trained. My maltese for example is 100% pad trained. She won't go outside but never has an accident as she always goes on the pad.
I sometimes wish they were all strictly out door trained at is seems less confusing for them but I know it wouldn't work because some days I'm gone for many hours and they would just have an accident so I need the pads.

There's advantages and disadvantages to both I guess and you just go with what works best for your situation.
