I watched a TV show not long ago about this. People who study animal behavior, do think self awareness is a sign of higher thinking. Dogs that can look in the mirror and see a paper dot on their back in the reflection, and then look at their own back, recognize that the mirror is a reflection of them. They understand the dog in the mirror is them. This is not always the case. Some dogs never understand. They did the same experiment with monkeys and other animals.. I saw this on PBS, it was so interesting.
