NEVER punish the dog by putting it in its crate or outside. Yorkies are too little to be outside unsupervised. If you did not catch it in the act of peeing where it was not supposed to, you lost your chance to correct it. It will not understand what you are screaming about. It does not speak your language fluently. It is a dog. If you catch it in the act, say "No" in a firm voice (not a deep, scare the sh!! out of it) and take it outside and say "potty". Never yell or throw a fit while you are correcting or cleaning. It will just think the act of peeing itself is the problem and will sneak off and pee when you are not looking.
You need to take your voice up an octave when talking to it. Yorkies respond well to a higher, female-like voice. I have a big husband w a deep voice. When he works w them in training, he raises his voice to a higher register. Yorkies LOVE him. Ours will do anything for him. In fact, he gets a better response in potty-training, so you can do this if you learn a more effective way of handling this.
Yorkies are terriers who can have a prey drive. They are never to be let out unleashed. You cannot trust them not to chase things. They are ratters. They will get the urge to chase things. It is your fault if they are not leashed and take off chasing something.
You need to make up w this dog BIG TIME. You need to love on it, give it high value treats it likes, speak to it lovingly - treat this dog like a woman you want to get to know but who will not give you the time of day.
If this is not your personality to adapt and do these things, you really should ask for help in turning it over to a rescue. We have members here who can help you. |
I'm with Taryn & a few others...I'll take a chance on you being "real" too.
I think you've gotten good advice from those who've responded but I
really feel Gidget nailed it with this statement.
Also, there's nothing at all wrong with using a pee pad indoors.
