Either of them would be a good idea. But it is a can not a bottle that you use for the pennies. Try one if it doesn't work try the other.
I have had simular situation.... cant help but wonder why they do it. A quick correction and right off to the appropriate potty area works well. As far as where to put him in a time out that can be hard.
I do use my cage for time outs but only when they have not been too harshly reprimanded vocaly or they will like you say associate that area in a bad light.
I have some useful tips on my site that might be helpful including the shaker can.
