In the run-up to Christmas, burglaries increase. Some people have alarm systems, either connected to security companies or straight to the police.
Others have big (apparently frightening) dogs to guard/protect their property. I have read time after time about poisoned meat being thown over yard fences - either to sedate the dogs while the crime is committed, or sometimes the dose is so high that the poor animal dies.
