Could be that some of the things they fed were too fatty or greasy. I've even read where some have given their dogs pork of all things, sausage and the like. I don't think feeding a balanced diet of lean red meat or wild game mixed with some rice and veggies would do any harm, then some cottage cheese, yogurt, cooked eggs, cheese, peanut butter, oatmeal cooked in a broth, once in awhile is going to hurt any dog. I've had a lot of dogs of my own and quite a few fosters and have never had any problems in giving them home cooked food.
Could also be someone fed their dogs something they shouldn't have and they didn't know it. Maybe a neighbor threw something, not so good, over the fence for them, maybe a family member or friend gave them something they thought would be ok. You just never know.
Even chickens you buy in the stores are full of fat due to what they are fed to fatten them super fast for selling.
Home cooked meals are still the healthiest and safest way to feed your babies. However, if you have really large dogs, that would be quite expensive but adding some "real" food to their kibble would be better than kibble alone.
