I think they expect everyone to be wealthy. If they are only looking for very affluent families to adopt their dogs, then they are missing out on loving homes elsewhere. I sure wouldn't discuss buying a dog without asking how much. I wouldn't pay a couple of thousand for an older dog even if I can afford it.
