Don't forget about the all-time favorite, Baking Soda! It is cheap and removes carpet odor. It also feels soft and cool to the feet. I usually keep it in the fridge and refrigerator to keep them fresh. When I want to deoderize carpet, I change the refrigerator baking soda and use the old one to spread throughout the carpet. Leave it on the carpet for about 30 minutes and vacuum away. It will cause you to need a new bag as it is heavy in your vacuum.
