I think an only dog may be slower at the barking thing. Gracie only barks when she is playing. She does a little growl that sounds more like a cat purring than a real growl when she is trying to get me to pay attention to her. It took her quite a while to realize she could bark. A dog that is around another dog that barks will pick it up more quickly.

I used to have a little Maltese that never barked. It was only when we got another dog that liked to bark that she started to bark when someone would come to the door.
