I find keeping the belly shaved minimizes matting for us so far we are at about 1-2inches long tge only matting is in her leg pits and belly. Her mattes are tiny so I loosen them with conditioned and use my fingers so it doesn't hurt for some I just cut them out if it won't affect the coat.
buuut I won't lie I'm tempted to cut it all off after only a month haha!
