When I told my dad that I was getting a yorkie he was concerned about the cost as well as the size of the dog. He's a big dog person and felt that I needed a more "substantial" pet. There are many decisions I make as an adult that my friends and family don't necessarily agree with however it's my decision. I have to live with the consequences of it not them.
So I understand that it is bittersweet that you're not able to share your joy with them, but don't not tell them for fear of judgement. Roll with the punches because everyone will not always agree with everything you do. Agree to disagree and stand firm with your choices.
