A couple of things...
I also had a hard time keeping clips in Maddie's hair. She would ruin it in 2 minutes! I suggest going to your local Target/Wal-Mart...whatever you have near you, and get those tiny clear rubberbands and put her hair in those. These rubberbands won't break her hair and when you're ready to take them out, they will just slide off (just don't leave them in too long). Keep putting her hair up on a regular basis for a while. Eventually she will get used to the feeling of having it up. After she's used to it, using a clip when you want to will be much easier.
As far as her coat...maybe you can ask your groomer about this, but my groomer would do hot oil treatments on my babies. It would have their hair super shiny and beautiful (not oily) and it's great for dry skin. I'm not sure what product she uses...I'll have to ask, but I'm sure it's something you would be able to get and have on hand when you think it's getting a little dull. What shampoo are you using? If you think you need to wash her more than usual, dilute your shampoo. It's the shampoo that drys their skin and coat. Use conditioner. It really makes a big difference. If you're just worried about the smell (and I know what you mean...kinda like dogsweat, except they don't sweat) it will go away after she starts to chill out. If it gets really bad, there are some great smelling doggy perfumes out there.
Wow...that turned out to be long! Hope I helped a little!
