We had Ozzy neutered at 6-1/2 months. Before that, walks were filled with frequent "leg lift" stops. That's stopped now. Otherwise, he behaves exactly the same. He's just as energetic. He recovered very quickly. We ended up going with the laser surgery since the vet said it was less traumatic and easier to heal from. I'd say within two days he was totally great; in fact, it was hard to keep him from jumping and running as is normal for even a few days.
