Sometimes what seem irrational to us makes perfect sense to a dog. Dogs can pick up fear from things we pay no attention to. Someone could have just been playing around with a rolled up newspaper or a fly swatter while your dog was watching and making the decision that he wanted no part of it. He is sensitive and also thinking. He may have gotten a wrong signal but in his head it makes sense. Obviously, he does not like the smoke alarm but it was probably the upset that it caused the humans that is bothering him more.

I don't think it is just a Yorkie thing. Some dogs are just more sensitive than others. Try to remain calm when things out of the ordinary happen as your dog picks up on how you react to circumstances. I think some dogs identify very much with their owners emotions and how they respond to situations.
