I am so sorry to hear about Winky, he is so young! It's tough, but don't give up hope. My Italian Greyhound was coughing a little and her vet did a chest xray and it showed an enlarged heart. She was diagnosed with congestive heart failure, and its really due to a mitral valve prolapse. That was three years ago. She sees an internist and I really think she might be gone now had I not taken her to him.
Hopefully the specialist can recommend a course of treatment that will extend Winky's life considerably. It's hard, but try to hold onto the hope.
