But ersonally would not want my own kids out there in their good clothes. I mean, kids clothes now days are kinda pricey. And if I have to pay for them, I want to encourage them to try and take care of them. I think if it's sprinkling or light rain (no thunder/lightning) and they were in play clothes with a adult out there, I would'nt mind too much. But I still wouldn't let them stay out too long.
If the OPer's son was 6 yrs old then I could see this being a little more of an issue but he is 13 yrs old. There is a huge difference in the accountability you give to a Jr High School age child vs a Kindergartner. Teenagers are faced with many decisions that they need to make responsible decisions for and the only way they will be able to do so is to make them responsible for all their decisions. As they mature they are faced with many decisions and need to know how to respond appropriately.

IMO if the OPer was so upset the venting needed to be done them it she should have expressed herself directly to her son. Otherwise, in the future he will not know that his playing in the rain in certain clothing was unacceptable.

High School is just around the corner and that is an entirely different senario that presents so many more challenges. My oldest son and his friends started a tradition while playing football in HS to have a Thanksgiving day football game. To this day they still get together to roll around in the freezing mud every Thanksgiving morning. Now that they are all in their 20's they still like to get dirty. If they could magically go back to their childhood I think they would to want to just to be able to roll in the dirt and play in the rain~
