Harley and I would usually walk .8k every day (just used a running map to map it), but we are training for agility and he can go for hours, I walk him with me all over town... I'm the one struggling to build up endurance, but I'm also working towards the 5k run with me and Harley together. I haven't started taking him with me, but what I'm doing is adding a block to my daily run when I feel I've mastered each level, then once I get good I'm going to start taking him with me for half of my daily run. he's only 3.5lb, but is nicknamed by friends "the energizer bunny on steroids". So I guess as long as you build up slowly, and make sure their diet includes what they need for that much exercise you should be good.
