We do dew claws on our puppies at 3 days old. I take the puppies with mama into the vet in their stroller--we don't wait in the waiting area--straight to the room. The vet checks mama for her milk (and checks her vaginal area for any bleeding problems) and may recommend supplements for mama at that time. The vet checks the puppies from top to bottom, looks inside mouths and ears, listens to heart and lungs. And then, he does the dew claws for which he charges me $5 a puppy.

One last point, if there were problems with whelping, mama and the puppies are being seen for the second time. Or, if the puppies are too small or having any difficulties then we will forgo the dew claws.

And yes, some breeders put together puppy packages. I do. But that is not the reason to choose a breeder.
