Well what I normally do is to put the cage in the same room as the family is in during the day and at night move it into the bedroom with me or have a separate cage for him there. Plus you will be able to hear his cries in the night when he need to go out to potty if the cage is in your room.
It comes down to him just being lonely.... as long as he can hear your voices and knows that someone is close by he will be a bit calmer. Not completely but better. You still need to hush him and possibly put a lightweight blanket over the cage. It helps him calm down and not get so excited when he sees someone walk by the cage. Make sure he has some toys to occupy his time with.
But most importantly... "continue to ignore him". Do not baby him or say anything to him when he is in his cage except your command for "HUSH". This only excites him more and prolongs the whining. In time he will get use to it and you wont hear a peep out of him.
