I have had really good results from Revolution. It works for fleas, ticks, heartworm prevention, ear mites, and some sarcoptic mange in dogs. It comes according to how much your dog weighs - we get it for 5 pounds and less.
I get it from the vet.

Since Cali is a Service and Therapy dog I also keep Capstar around for "just in case" issues incase she gets exposed to dogs who have fleas - it works in about 30 minutes.

My vet says these cannot be given any closer than 3 weeks from the last dose.
