What I meant, and I think Lorraine was agreeing with, is that the judges seem to favor people they've been seeing in the ring for some time. A newby will have a hard time even with the most beautiful dog but a well known handler with that same dog will finish his CH very quickly. Basically, judges tend to focus more on the people than the dogs. "Paying your dues" means you spend a couple of years going into the ring with your dog without expecting to win much until the judges know you. It has little to do with the dog. There are, of course, a number of tricks that can help buy a title, but that's a different discussion.
