Usually it is done a a larger part of the body becasue their is so much detail and it looks very nice. I have not seen one on the hand .These type of tats will fade a lot easier. Because of frequent handwashing. I have all my fingers tattooed on. THey have tiny paw prints. they have faded but not that bad. You may want to think about a different spot for a tat portrait.
People get a tattoo in remmberance of a beloved pet. That does not menta you have to get one of a animal that has passed. It is ok to get one when the dog is alive.
