I couldn't agree more about the fuel, SWHouston. Fuel and water are the two biggies in my opinion and I've been stranded in the Corpus Christi area after 3 different storms. Those are the two things that are always at a premium.
A big SUV is the next best thing to a motorhome. Before we got ours we would pack up the important things in plastic tubs and put those all in one area ready to go in our truck. A bit of duct tape around the tops of the tubs makes them water proof and viola.
The other thing I would recommend is knowng the back roads out of your area. We are motorcycle riders and had special touring handbooks of all the back roads we picked up at Barnes & Noble. We already knew most of the roads but knowing how to get out of town and staying off the freeways and main roads kept us out of that horror on the freeways during Rita. It took us a few hours to get from Pasadena to Katy but it was steady moving and no traffic jams. |
