YT 1000 Club Member | Disaster Preparedness - Are You Ready ? There's SO many threats out there now a days, with Hurricanes, Tornadoes and even Terrorist threats, one would be well off, thinking about taking even the most bsic steps, regardless of where one lives. I have a Checklist (HA to long to put in a Post here) where I can step through it, and makes sure I have sufficient supplies to make it though a Power Outage or some inconvenience of services. In discussion, so many things can be brought out, and sometimes the simplest of items/procedures can be so helpful to one, and so easy to forget. I found this Link to a FEMA Article which may be of interest... http://www.fema.gov/areyouready/ Do you make/take any precautions for an event in your area ?

| Not really, I know thats bad. The only thing I do is to make sure I have carriers near the door, this way in any emergency I could throw the kiddos in a carrier and head out, I guess we will have to rough it from there.

YT 1000 Club Member | ArmaniMan, HA, hay, that's a start ! When I got interested in getting ready, all I had is a written sheet of paper, and just a few checkmarks on it to start. I've since moved that information over to my Computer, have links and references as well, since my word processor supports links.

YT 1000 Club Member | bellababy, FANTASTIC !! That list looks a LOT like mine, since I live on the Gulf Coast, and the Wind gets up a little, occasionally. I specially liked your inclusion of Paper Plates and Utensils. During our Hurricane Season, I have what I call a "Go Bag". It's a spare soft Duffel type bag, which I have a complete set of Clothes, Toilet Articles and stuff in it, for me. Just enough for a few days away from home, in case we need to evacuate. All I have to do it just pick it up and throw it in the Vehicle. But, you and ArmaniMan mentioned a Crate/Carrier... Many people use them regularly, and I have one, actually, it's big enough for both my guys, save that they never get in it. It just sets in the Utility Room open, for them to occasionally stash a Treat in ! The thought being, it's a great Container for our Animal's stuff, if they aren't in it when you go. I usually just Harness and Leash my guys in the seat of the Car, I have two leash's that are permanently attached to the back//bottom of the Car-seats, where we can easily just snap them in safely. But just as a start here, here's a list of things you could shove into a Crate, where they would be covered for a day or two. Things to stuff in the Carrier/Crate for your Animals: Leashes, short and long. Harness, Collars, with ID and Inoculation Tags, Food, bag or box, Bowls, Water Container, sealable w/lid, Towels, just in case of standing water or Rain. Covers, Sweater, Rain Coat, warm stuff. Toys, Poop Bags, Newspaper, Potty Pad, & Your Emergency Envelope ! Can you think of anything else they'd need ?

| I knew I forgot something...lol I also have a trunk lined in cedar...I keep all my kids baby pic's and books and my home owners & insurance paper, marriage licenes & pic's and my furbutts AKC papers, our birth certs. passports...all that important paper work you need. leash and harness go on before we even walk out the door and tags are on the harness....and I keep doggy travel bowels and baggies in my truck at all times...my furbutts are outside trained, no need for potty pads cause they wouldn't use them anyways...and I keep dry and canned food for them in my bends...I'm not worried about toys or treats...I will buy them more when I get to North Florida. We take all I mention in my above post and this post with us, cause you just never know what a hurricane might do..you hope for best but you prepare for the worst...Hubby has a truck and I have a SUV....all our kids are grown and moved out, so its just DH & I, our 2 Yorkies 2 cats that we load up and go..We have family in North Florida, so that where we head to, but we only leave when its a cat 3 or higher.

| My hubby, the furbabies and I are very fortunate that we inherited a small, rather old motorhome a few years ago. It doesn't look like much but my husband keeps it in good shape and the pups love to go places in it. When the first storm enters the Gulf, we get it all ready with plenty of extra gasoline stored in a small trailer we pull, go on and pack it with the pics and documents we need along with plenty of food and water for all of us so we can take off with 30 to 45 minutes notice. I've lived on the Gulf Coast all my life and been through more hurricanes than I care to remember. I promised myself when I became an adult and it was my decision I would never stay through one again. I've packed up and left with four horses and three dogs before. |

YT 1000 Club Member | eddiesmom, Having a small motor home would really be nice. Unfortunately, I live in an HOA, and have no where to keep one. I kinda did the next best thing, and made my last vehicle purchase a large SUV. It has a very large gas tank, and could get us quite a ways out from the storm. I had also thought to buy one of those "platforms" which one can mount in the trailer hitch, and have a place to put a few gas cans, outside the vehicle. My biggest fear is not running out of food, but not being able to transport us to where it's at. So, stress the Fuel part !!

| I couldn't agree more about the fuel, SWHouston. Fuel and water are the two biggies in my opinion and I've been stranded in the Corpus Christi area after 3 different storms. Those are the two things that are always at a premium. A big SUV is the next best thing to a motorhome. Before we got ours we would pack up the important things in plastic tubs and put those all in one area ready to go in our truck. A bit of duct tape around the tops of the tubs makes them water proof and viola. The other thing I would recommend is knowng the back roads out of your area. We are motorcycle riders and had special touring handbooks of all the back roads we picked up at Barnes & Noble. We already knew most of the roads but knowing how to get out of town and staying off the freeways and main roads kept us out of that horror on the freeways during Rita. It took us a few hours to get from Pasadena to Katy but it was steady moving and no traffic jams. |

YT 1000 Club Member | eddiesmom, I AGREE on the Water ! I have the ability to put up about 40 gl in Portable Containers. When we think things are going to go sour, I can fill them up, and stack them just inside the Garage. I have a Whole House Filtering System, so it's pretty good stuff, even at a few weeks old. Another thing (still stressing Water) I bought a "carton" (24 bottles) of Water, and set them in the bottom of our Freezer. They can be set out into one of the Coolers, or separated out for drinking should we have to pack up. Plus, in their frozen state, they support the food stuffs which we would pack and take. (HA, instant Ice Water) Things like this, and I really like the Back Roads reference you made, are really terrific hints toward a more comfortable existence when a Storm comes. If only people would take time to read through this thread, there are numerous little tips like we've mentioned, which are so important. I'm probably repeating this, but I really like the design and function. This link is to a Portable Waterer which is Slosh Proof, great for the vehicle. I'm thinking about getting a second and making it an IceCube. http://www.petsmart.com/product/inde...54654&lmdn=Dog

YT 1000 Club Member | Valenie, YES, totally realistic! I've been through many of them, having retired from 35 years in Health Care. We would solicit some of the High School Students as participants. They yelled and thrashed around, pretending to be in pain form various injuries, and the make up was quite convincing. We would cringe, seeing that some of the patients occasionally were the Football Players... HA, those guys weigh a TON !
