My 8-week old pup was probably 3 to 3 1/2 pounds and ate like a pig from the get-go. I never had any problems with him.

True or not - my vet said to give him cottage cheese before he went to sleep for the evening (around 9 or 10). She said this would give him more protein, be more filling, and stay with him longer - allowing both of us to get more sleep. It worked and he has slept 6 to 7 hours soundly from the first night on. And - I was to feed him immedately when he woke up in the morning.

This puppy was a good size and was known to eat well with a hearty appetite before I got him. This certainly helps! He's four months and probably 5 pounds now.

I'm a little more conservative - and would watch a couple more bowel movements for blood before I would take my pup to the vet. (He goes several times a day - so I would be able to see several movements within the next 24 hours.) But, as other people have mentioned -- very young and small pups need to be more carefully watched.
