The outer edge of the eye is suspicious, but I would think he would have been squinting by the next day, and he probably would have been pawing at it, and the eye would probably have been watery by the next day. Scratches and ulcers usually become infected quickly without antibiotic. Your vet will be able to tell you what the likely cause was.
A single piece of cut hair could have gotten in his eye and stayed there for a couple of days and caused an irritation that led to the ulcer. I worry about that when I shave Max's ears.
