You are NOT being selfish at all. You are asking your friends for support. You've GOT it from me, my friend.
Cancer runs rampant through my family as well, and we have also had our share of heartache. It is a terrible way to go. But it is also something that gives the suffering person time to prepare their family and settle their affairs, so in a way, it has its' own blessings as well. I know it's not something you want to think about, but cancer also lets loved ones ease into the grieving because of the time it takes. I know it is still very very painful to lose someone you love, and none of the above makes it any better. I just want you to know I am here for you if you need me, pm me anytime.
