OP, have you considered training at the door? If you can't do baby gates, what you can do is have your pup in a sit stay before you open it. Once in a sit stay, leash him up (in case he darts) and watch him as you attempt to open the door. As soon as Fido starts to get up, close the door. The goal is to have Fido in a sit, stay while you go about your business at he door. If he is allowed out, then he'll wait for your command or to be led out.
It will be a tedious and long training process, but I'm sure he'll learn. You can even put a sign at the door for visitors to let them know why it's taking so long to come to the door. |
I'm always in favor of training but I have to say, I thought my boys were trained until the day Teddy bolted out the door to chase the UPS truck. I decided to put up the gate.
