I think sleeping on it is a good idea. Maybe you could discuss this with mom once the situation has cooled down. Let her know how you feel about it. I understand her protecting Sammy; however, she needs to keep your feelings in mind too. You might suggest in the future to separate the two of them instead of hitting.

Reading over your post. Sorry you had such a bad day. I really like Nancy's advice.
Then I was reading Rhonda's advice. It made me think, even doggie moms nip or growl to "teach" the puppies. I guess our nipping and growling is our tone of voice and eye contact.

What your mom did was not what we teach now a days as a way to train dogs, but it was not that long past that we thought hitting a dog on his nose was a way to react to an aggressive dog.. not that your baby was aggressive. It is also hard for someone who is not around two or more dogs to know the difference between play and aggression.


It takes a lot to learn not to hit when you were raised when that was a method of discipline.
