She came from a local breeder that sold only AKC registered puppies and came recommended by the local kennel club. Sydney came with her papers and health guarantee. Within a year, Sydney needed double knee surgery. The breeder finally admitted another puppy in the same litter had knee trouble, but it was not a covered condition. She finally offered to take Sydney back, but by then I had fallen in love with Syd. Besides, what was the breeder going to do with her? I kept Syd. The breeder finally gave me another female Yorkie from different parents, which I gave to my parents and they love her.
My best friend bought a cute little toy mix from her neighbor lady (no papers, health guarantee, genetic testing--backyard breeder). Her dog has never had any health issues compared to my AKC registered with over $2000 in vet bills.
I guess my point is, you can never tell. |
I know that's why all those guarantees are worthless. A good breeder would have given your money back and allowed you to keep the dog. I had a horrible experience with a backyard breeder and my little dog had a genetic illness that paralyzed him. There wasn't anything the vet could do, and my sons watched in horror as the little guy deteriorated. There really are some great breeders who really are trying to do right by the breed, and are not breeding for profit. Breeders who breed for profit are going to continue to breed breeding dogs that they know carry genetic illness, and they won’t spend any money for testing. I found a great breeder through the YTCA, but if you are looking for a parti, YTCA members don’t breed for them, it’s not a part of standard and is considered a fault. There's no way I'd ever buy from an irresponsible breeder again, the money is one thing the emotional pain is another.
