Sadly as a human species people will fool other people for awhile, will not breed to the best of this breed, willl despite ethics fail to support their puppy buyers. But all breeder members have passed a certain bar, which still means that you as a would be purchaser needs to do your homework.

References are a must; former buyers, and the breeders vet. Knowledge for you the purchaser a must. There are many health concerns such that one out of three Yorkies may have one of these health concerns. Sobering isn't it?

But still what no breeder can guarantee absolutely 100% is that this puppy will never ever get sick ever over the life of the dog.
What you want to do is to buy into a healthy line with a breeder who stands behind their breeding. To offer you lifetime support and advice; and btw even if 15yrs later they have stopped breeding.
This statement speaks volumes of a breeder. It's the support or lack of that makes a breeder an OUTSTANDING breeder. You can go to anyone to buy a puppy but IMO to really make that cut into the ranks of a highly respected breeder is to offer support when needed. Yes, a refund of money for a sick dog would be a plus if there was a medical concern but it's so much more. Being able to pick up the phone or a quick email to get a little genuine support would be very high on my list of important attributes of a breeder.

All breeders will have problems from time to time...Mother nature can really do a number on us sometimes...I always think an ethical and caring breeder, will return the money and allow the owner to keep the pet...if they want. I think it is a tactic to demand the puppy back in order to recoup your costs...
Totally agree with all of the above. We fall in love with our pets and many of us treat them as our children. We will do whatever is necessary to give proper medical care to our little furkids. When a breeder requires the pet to be returned for a refund or makes a refund and cuts off communication it speaks volumes to who they are and why they are breeding.

Recently a new pet shop opened in my neighorhood so I had to go in to check it out. I knew the answers that I would get but asked anyway.

1. What is the health guarantee
2. What if the puppy gets sick

the answers were this:

1. One week for parasites and one year for genetic issues
2. You will need to return the puppy and we will refund.

This tactic is used for nothing more than getting out of refunding the purchase price. Who is going to turn in a puppy that has been sick at a year old? You become attached and they are part of your family.

A responsible breeder who genuinely cares about the dogs they are breeding should step up, refund and support the owner. But I now feel that after my time on YT I am a much more educated consumer and would not expect anything less from a breeder that I would chose.

Furthermore, a member of a breed club (ie YTCA) should go the extra mile with all they do because they are being held to a much higher bar than the puppymill or the lady selling Yorkies on a sign at the post office.
