A lady after my own heart! Our carpet is on borrowed time and the tile is a-coming,lol!
Both DH and I talk to "the boys" just like they were going to answer us back. We have to spell certain words (like bath, walkies, etc.) or they would never cooperate, lol. The main operating word we use whenever we want them to come back inside (that works every time) is "TATER", their fav treat.
