I agree the crate or pen should not be used for punishment. Also, give your pup LOTS of different chew toys. Ozzy has Kong, cow hoof, bully sticks (large, medium, small), hard rubber dental bone with nubs, etc. I always made sure he has something interesting to chew. So far, we've had no problems with him biting. However, when playing, and he starts biting even playfully, we use the "claw" thing on his hind quarter and that has really worked. A good high pitched OUCH also does wonders, as you said.
