I think it depends- if there is someone you have been friends with your whole life, or if you had a sister of something- someone who was FOR SURE going to be your maid of honor- I would ask them right away, because they may feel like you are not going to ask since they would obviously know you are getting married. However, for others you may not be so sure about or worry will change I would wait at least until you have a definite date set.
