Never unless I am training Tibbe to stay in the front yard and not leave the premises. Then I take his leash off so he has to listen to my words and my body language rather than be restricted by the leash. Otherwise, I keep him on the leash for his safety. In his own backyard, he can run and play off leash all he wants. He doesn't seem to mind at all being on leash when we are out walking but even if he did, I would be too scared to let him run free.
