The pure breeds of today came from careful cross breeding to encourage particular traits. The cross breeders of today are doing it to fulfill a pet market and cash in on the "designer pet" craze.
PS- I've got a mixed breed. Scarlett is Yorkie and something else (most likely Maltese). I love her to pieces, but I would have never given money to a backyard breeder for her.
