The length of time for that depends upon the state laws and also how much room the shelter has. Additionally, if the owners do not claim the dog, they usually will contact rescue or have their own adoption programs. Personally, I would rather do that than to come home and find my neighbor's dog dead in the street.

Most shelters have fines for people who leave their dogs out and often paying fines is a good incentive for keeping their dog inside!

Lastly, I will say this about euthanasia. While the thought of it is very depressing, it often is a relief for some dogs that have lived a life of hell. I am not referring to gas chambers...I think it might be a good idea for anyone calling their animal control to find out what method they use for euthanasia. I also want to say that I would rather see a dog humanely euthanized than to see it suffer after being hit by a car.

Our Great Pyrenees was hit by a truck and all of us including the dog went through hell. His hip was completely shattered. He could not walk for a long time. His hip was set, given pain meds, and then had to be tend to night and day as he could not even get up to get water. It was horrible to watch him this way. With that said, he is fine now other than a forever permanent limp. But I think he is fine because I had come home right after he had been hit. What if I hadn't been there? He would have laid there for hours suffering. So, I agree with being humanely euthanized over the car hit. However, I think your neighbor is just being, sorry for lack of better words, STUPID!
