THE MICROCHIP FOR IDENTIFICATION WAS REMOVED AND WILL BE KEPT WITH THE RECORD. LIVER SAMPLES WERE COLLECTED FOR POSSIBLE HISTOPATHOLOGY IF NEEDED. THE ABDOMEN WAS CLOSED.

I was so shocked to learn that this IS HEREDITARY. In addition to Decorations, I have his littermate and also three other Biewers that were imported. I'm not only having his sister tested, but the other three Biewers I had imported from Germany.

It was my dream to establish this rare breed here in the USA, with a very limited breeding/showing program. It is a devastating loss to my very small breeding program, not to mention my financial losses, now knowing I should not breed his sister either. His sister just won a BEST IN SHOW the first weekend in November of 2003. I have invested thousands of dollars in the five Biewers, paying for flights to Germany, shipping the Biewers here, and showing them.

I MAKE THIS PLEA TO ALL BIEWER BREEDERS: PLEASE - UNITE and work towards a common goal by coming forward and sending Dr. Tobias all the information to try and eradicate this from the Biewer as a breed. By doing so it can be either stopped or kept under control before it infests the breed and condemns so much of our future generations as it has in other breeds. Most importantly, serum bile acid test your pups as early as 10 weeks old as Dr. Tobias suggests, it's our only defense. Questionable or suspect dogs should NOT be used, nor their parents or siblings, for breeding as they may very well be carriers of the genetic combination, if not the disease.

Remember that NO Breed is without health problems of some sort, they are living creatures, just as we humans are, and every living thing has some health issues.
Sorry about your loss of Decoration. There was some information about liver shunt on this site www.biewercoa.org On this site they are trying to get them tested before they come over. Sorry you have invested so much in your biewers and are not going to be able to breed them. I hope other breeder are a responsible as you and don't breed the biewer if they carry this. Would love to see pictures of your biewer, they are just so cute. Congratulations on your biewer girl winning best of show. Is it a AKC reconized breed?........Cindy
