I'm blessed that I had to only deal with that problem with Secret for only a month or two. I didn't crate train him but I did do something like it. I actually pad trained him. When I first got him when I would go to work I would put him in the bathroom I lined the whole floor with training pads I placed his food, toys and and crate in there. After every two wks I would take a later away (of course I change them everyday) and now that he is 5 months old he only has 1 pad down and when he's out during the day with us he'll go to the bathroom on his own and use his pad on his own. Secret also handles his business out side he's trained to go outside and on a pad. As far as for crate training I think it's a great thing we had a Pit Bull (Midnight RIP) that we crate trained and it was the best thing we could ever done. I hope this helps. Good Luck
