I honestly don't like the idea of the pee-pad being so close to the puppy's bed anyway. I mean I wouldn't want to sleep next to my toilet. If you change the pad after every time the dog pees on it that will get very expensive and if you don't change it the pad will smell. I wouldn't want my dog to be sleeping next to a stinky pee-pad. I don't like the idea of crate training one way or another. My yorkie goes inside on pee-pads because our schedule is so irregular that it is simply impossible to train him to go outside and maintain a routine. His pee-pad is in the opposite corner from where his bed and food dish are. And it took a bit of time to train him to go on the pee-pad. I just put him over on it every hour or so and sometimes he went on it. And now he just goes over to it to do his business.
