My yorkie is a girl, but I have a male shih tzu. When Oliver goes to the groomer they always put a blue bow on his topknot. My kids and sister always give me a hard time about it and say that he looks like a girl. In between grooming I just put it up with only a band - no bow - and they still have a problem with it. He's my dog, I don't care what other people say - I'll do what I want with his hair. I think he looks adorable with his "samarai topknot" because then I can see his beautiful brown eyes.
